About the Off Road Rescue Unit (ORRU)
The Off Road Rescue Unit (ORRU) is a volunteer organisation dedicated to providing specialist support in off-road, remote, and wilderness rescue operations throughout the Western Cape. As an active member of Wilderness Search And Rescue (WSAR), ORRU works alongside government agencies, emergency services, and other volunteer teams to assist those in distress in challenging and often inaccessible terrain.
Equipped with 4×4 vehicles, advanced recovery gear, and trained personnel, ORRU plays a vital role in transporting rescuers, medical teams, and equipment to scenes where conventional emergency vehicles cannot reach. Our members bring expertise in vehicle recovery, navigation, communications, medical support, and technical rescue, ensuring rapid, safe, and effective responses in all conditions.
Beyond rescue operations, ORRU is committed to promoting outdoor safety, preparedness, and responsible adventure through community engagement and awareness initiatives.
Whether it’s a hiker stranded on a remote trail, a medical evacuation from rugged terrain, or a complex multi-agency rescue, ORRU stands ready — 24/7 — to assist those in need.
